YEAST INFECTION: CAUSES AND HOME REMEDIES
A client at my office the other day complained of itching and discharges in her vaginal area and this was almost exactly a month after she delivered of a baby. In addition to hers, she told me her husband complained to her of penal itching and dryness of skin around the penal head. This obviously is a microbial infection and most likely cause is yeast (fungus). I recommended some home remedies that really helped the couple; the same I will discuss with you in this article.
Yeast (fungus) is a microorganism that can infect different parts of the body; however, our focus here is on the vagina. This vaginal yeast infection can be referred to as Yeast vaginitis or Candida vaginitis. Candida albicans is the yeast species involved this kind candida vaginitis. Aside the vagina, other areas this fungus can affect are the lower abdominal region, under the breast, dentures, nail beds, and beneath skin folds. Women suffer more from this infection than men (about 75% women population become infected with this fungus at one point in their lives).
It’s also interesting to tell you that there a lot of misconceptions about causes and general believe about vaginal infection. The best is to prevent it with healthy routine and keep up with the natural remedies to avoid a worse situation.
Also there are some uncommon causes which sometimes contribute to appearance of vaginal odor such as cervical or vaginal cancer, rectovaginal fistula which means there are openings between vagina and rectum which feces can penetrate into the vagina and infect.
Symptoms include itching, vaginal discharge, burning or swelling, pain in urination, or sexual intercourse could occur. For my client, her husband observed the itching first before her own itching feelings. Men tend to experience symptoms first in yeast infection and some other sexual infections. This is not saying that yeast infection is a sexually transmitted infection; No! Though it’s transmitted through sexual intercourse, it is not a STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection). This is because we have experienced this condition in women that are not sexually active.
Factors responsible for increased risk of infection include pregnancy, diabetes, use of oral contraceptives, chronic health conditions, stress, steroids, antibiotics, post menopause due to declining oestrogen levels. Remember I told you that my client just delivered of a baby; this most probably means she developed the infection during pregnancy. For the infection to occur, the normal balance of yeast and bacteria remain disturbed (this may mean an overgrowth of yeast). In pregnancy the pH of the vaginal fluctuates making it suitable for yeast to proliferate faster that with respect to bacteria presence on the vaginal mucosa. This may also be due to immunosuppressants, chemotherapy, and steroids.
