How to treat Dark circles in your eyes
Dark circles occur on the skin under the eyes and is linked to physical or mental stress, prolonged crying, insomnia, staying to close to computers and televisions, ageing, unhealthy diet. Some cases is hereditary. Dark circles are evenly distributed between both genders.
To prevent dark circles from appearing you must always:
  • have adequate sleep
  • abstain from stimulants like cocaine, amphetamine, ephedrine, cannabis, opioids –morphine, codeine
  • eat foods rich in vitamins A, C, E
  • drink enough water daily to flush off all body impurities and get rid of unnecessary water retained in the body
  • avoid rubbing your eyes too much or too often as it could make your blood vessels around the area dilate and keep more than required blood
  • remove make-up before going to bed as the chemicals there could cause skin irritation
  • limit sun exposure to reduce UV intoxication
  • abstain from tobacco (active and passive smoking), alcohol and caffeine; smoking damages skin cells, alcohol and caffeine contributes to dehydration which in turn weakens the delicate skin around the eyes.

Here are some natural homemade remedies that can get rid of dark circles.


Honey has antiseptic and anti-inflammation properties. In addition, it has skin-lightening properties that helps fade off the dark circles. Papaya is a beta-carotene rich food containing enzymes and phytochemicals that are good for the skin. The secrete beauty nutrient in papaya is papain, an enzyme that has skin-lightening properties. Apply topically to skin around the eye.

¼ ripe papaya mashed in a paste and apply or you can add 1 tablespoon of honey. Apply on the face and leave for 30 minutes. Then rinse with cold water.


Milk contains lactic acid and vitamin B12 that has skin-lightening properties. With honey’s skin-lightening properties serves as a synergy with that of the milk. Mix two teaspoons of honey with one teaspoon of milk powder and apply on the affected area. Leave for about 30 minutes and wash off with warm water. Repeat twice daily for one week.


Lemon has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, it has skin-lightening properties. Make a mixture of mashed ripe papaya, 1 tablespoon each of honey and lemon juice. Apply around the eye and leave for 10 minutes and wash in cold water. Repeat once daily for about a week or two.


You can use almond oil mixed with vitamin E oil on the skin around the eye before going to bed and leave till the next morning then wash off with lukewarm water. Repeat daily till dark circles disappear.


Cucumber has skin-lightening properties enabling the dark circles disappear. Cut slices of fresh cucumber and refrigerate for about 30 minutes. Put the slices on the affected skin area for about 10 minutes. Wash the area with water. Repeat twice daily for about a week.

Alternatively you can mesh the cucumber and mix with lemon juice of equal amount and form a paste of the mixture. Apply on the affected area and leave for 20 minutes. Wash off in cold water. Repeat the procedure twice daily for a week or more.


Tomato has skin-lightening properties. Make a tomato juice and add one teaspoon of tomato juice with one-half of lemon juice and apply on the dark circles around the eye. Allow for 10 minutes then rinse off with cold water. Repeat this twice daily for one week

Alternatively, you can drink a glass of tomato juice and add a pinch of salt, lemon juice. For its optimal effect, you need to drink it immediately after it’s made. Drink twice daily for a week


Turmeric has antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce dark circles. It smoothens and softens the skin around the eye. Mix two teaspoons each of turmeric powder and pineapple juice to make a thick paste. Apply on the affected area and leave for about 10 minutes before rinsing of in cold water. Repeat this until you get positive results.
